What is IDEA?
Founded in 1992 in Porto, Portugal, IDEA is an international association of members from more than 80 countries with the aim to promote and advocate for drama/theatre as part of a full human education and to provide an international forum for those working as drama/theatre educators,practitioners and researchers throughout the world.
IDEA is more than an association of members or a network – it is a movement for creative and critical education. With a focus on ethical relationality, postcolonial awareness, youth empowerment, and artistic activism, IDEA continues to evolve in response to the needs of its members and the challenges of our time.
Whether working in formal or non formal educational contexts, community arts, youth empowerment, lifewide/lifelong learning or research, IDEA members share a commitment to using drama and theatre to create more just, imaginative, and inclusive futures.

Mission & Vision
IDEA celebrates the richness and diversity of our global drama/theatre education community.
We represent our members in international, national and local settings and processes, in the spirit of solidarity and professional collegiality.
We advocate for Drama/Theatre aducation as one of the crucial fields in arts education, essential for the development of every human being.
We collaborate with UNESCO through the World Alliance for Art Education and other important stakeholders, to work on promoting drama/theatre and education
Our Mission is
To represent and speak for drama/theatre and education internationally;
To liaise and collaborate with other organisations working in fields relevant to education, the arts and culture and drama/theatre;
To organise international congresses and conferences for drama/theatre and education focused on international themes;
To initiate and support research about drama/theatre and education;
To produce publications and circulate information about drama/theatre and education;
To encourage the international exchange of drama/theatre and education practitioners through our global membership platform and regional networks.
Our Vision is
To strengthen equitable access to quality drama/theatre education for all, across the world.
HOW IDEA WORKS
IDEA is an association of individuals and professional associations supporting and promoting drama/theatre and education. IDEA is open to regional and international associations and to other institutes, bodies, networks, organisations, schools, universities and individuals working in drama/theatre and education. We represent drama/theatre and education in a world context.
